If you’ve ever stood in front of our menu wondering what half the words mean, you’re in good company. Every day, hundreds of people walk into our dispensary in Victor, NY, and no matter how long someone has been shopping with us, the same handful of questions come up again and again.
So we put together this guide to answer them directly — no jargon, no judgment, just straightforward info from the FingerLakes Cannabis Co. team. Whether you’re new to cannabis or you’ve been shopping with us since we opened almost two years ago, consider this your cheat sheet.

1. What is the difference between Indica and Sativa?
Short answer: Indica strains are generally associated with a relaxed, body-heavy feeling, while Sativa strains are generally associated with a more energizing, uplifting feeling. Hybrids fall somewhere in between and blend traits of both.
Here’s the slightly longer version. Indica and Sativa started out as botanical classifications, or a way to describe the physical shape of the plant. Indica plants tend to be short and bushy; Sativa plants tend to be tall and lanky.
Over time, people started using those same labels to describe the effects of a strain, but modern science tells a more complicated story. Because of decades of cross-breeding, most strains today are hybrids, and the effects you feel have more to do with a strain’s specific cannabinoid and terpene profile than whether it’s labeled Indica or Sativa.
That said, here’s the general framework our team uses when someone asks:
- Indica-leaning strains: Often described as relaxing, calming, and good for winding down in the evening.
- Sativa-leaning strains: Often described as energizing, uplifting, and better suited for daytime or social activities.
- Hybrids: A blend of both, often bred to lean slightly one way or the other depending on the specific strain.
The most reliable way to find what works for you is by paying attention to the terpene profile and starting with a small amount to see how you respond. Everyone’s body chemistry is different, and our staff can walk you through terpenes in more detail the next time you’re in the shop.
2. What is the difference between rosin and resin?
Short answer: Live resin and rosin are both cannabis concentrates, but they’re made differently. Live resin is extracted using solvents (like butane or propane) from freshly frozen cannabis plants. Rosin is extracted without any solvents at all, using only heat and pressure to squeeze the concentrate directly out of the plant material.
Let’s break each one down:
Live Resin
Live resin starts with cannabis flower that’s flash-frozen immediately after harvest, rather than dried and cured first. That flash-freezing step is the key; it preserves more of the plant’s original terpenes (the compounds responsible for flavor and aroma), which is why live resin is known for being especially flavorful and aromatic. It’s made using a solvent-based extraction process.
Rosin
Rosin skips solvents entirely. Instead, cannabis flower (or hash) is placed between heated plates and pressed until the resinous oil is squeezed out. Because there’s no solvent involved, rosin is often considered a purer, more “clean label” option. This specific method also preserves more of the plant’s original terpenes, retaining as much of the specific plant’s effects, rather than just THC. For this reason, rosin is a great choice for anyone who prefers a solventless product and/or wants to experience the truest form of cannabis.
Which one should you try? Both are potent, flavorful concentrates. The right one really comes down to personal preference. 3. Is FingerLakes Cannabis Co. a medical or recreational dispensary?
Short answer: FingerLakes Cannabis Co. is a recreational (adult-use) dispensary only. We do not currently service medical cannabis patients or process medical cannabis cards. Any adult 21 and older with a valid government-issued ID can shop with us: no medical card or doctor’s recommendation required. Just bring your ID, and our team will help you find the right products for what you’re looking for.
4. Can FingerLakes Cannabis Co. ship products out of state?
Short answer: No. We are not able to ship cannabis products out of New York State, or anywhere outside of our approved local delivery area.
This isn’t a policy choice. It’s federal and state law. Cannabis remains illegal at the federal level, which means it cannot legally cross state lines through the mail, courier, or any shipping carrier, regardless of where it’s headed. All purchases from FingerLakes Cannabis Co. must be picked up in-store in Victor, NY, or delivered locally within our approved New York cannabis delivery zone (see question #6 below for our full delivery area).
5. Can you guarantee a product will help me sleep?
Short answer: No, we can’t guarantee how any cannabis product will affect you, including for sleep. Cannabis affects everyone differently based on body chemistry, tolerance, dosage, and the specific product used. What works well for one customer may not work the same way for another.
What we can do is share what other customers have had success with when they’re looking for something to help them wind down at night. A few categories our team commonly points people toward for rest and relaxation:
- Indica-leaning flower or pre-rolls: often reached for in the evening when customers are looking to unwind.
- 1:1 THC:CBD or CBN-infused edibles: CBN in particular is a cannabinoid many customers associate with relaxation, and it’s increasingly common in “nighttime” edible formulations.
- Low-dose tinctures: easy to control your dose and adjust up or down until you find what feels right.
- CBD-forward products: for customers who want a calming effect without a strong psychoactive experience.
